Greens suggest Joschka Fischer continue as mediator

Brussels, 18/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - The co-presidents of the Greens/EFA Group at the European Parliament, Daniel Cohn-Bendit and Monica Frassoni, state in a press release that Angela Merkel ought to recommend Joschka Fischer as special EU envoy for the Middle East in order to obtain a ceasefire, relaunch an initiative in the context of the Quartet's roadmap and prepare an international conference with a view to a peace agreement in the region. In his capacity as German Foreign Minister, Joschka Fischer was held in high esteem by Israel and the Palestinian Authority alike, and this is still true today, the two MEPs commented.
