Infringement procedures against Italy in sport betting

Brussels, 17/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - In a press release the European Betting Association (EBA) has welcomed the Commission's decision to send a warning letter to Italy over certain provisions in its financial law of 2006, in force since the beginning of the year, but which has not been notified to the Commission. The EBA explains that this law introduces “unjust and illegal” restrictions that block access to internet sites and sport betting services that have not been authorised by the Italian authorities. The organisation also indicates that since January 2006 several of its members that had been set up in accordance with the rules of other Member States had been “put on the black list and had experienced constraints on their activities. In April 2006, the Italian authorities received an identical warning on rules that were hampering betting in sport with regard to the free provision of services (EUROPE 9170).
