13/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - Addressing the EP defence sub-committee, chaired by Karl von Wogau, on 12 July, the Finnish Ambassador to the Political and Security Committee (PSC) Teemu Tanner acknowledged the need for solutions to improve funding capacities for CFSP, and especially ESDP, missions. He hoped that progress could be made under Finnish Presidency and said he was in favour of greater transparency and enhanced Parliamentary monitoring of activities in these areas. Questioned by German Green MEP Angelika Beer on the possible use of an EU battle group in Darfur as part of a UN operation at the start of 2007, he said that “It is too soon to speculate”. For the moment the EU was continuing to support the work of the African Union in Darfur and the transition to a UN operation.
