Opponent of Iranian regime Maryam Radjavi criticises search for nuclear compromise

Strasbourg, 05/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - Accompanied by the British EPP-ED MEP Struan Stevenson (SCUP, Scotland), Mogens Camre (UEN, Denmark), André Brie (GUE/NGL, Germany) and Portuguese Socialist MEP Paulo Casacan Maryam Radjavi, the leader of the Iranian National Council of Resistance (INDR), criticised the search for a nuclear compromise between the “Six” and Iran (see related article). “The Iranian government is playing for time. Negotiations will come to nothing. By the time the international community wakes up, we will realise they have the nuclear bomb,” she said. “We increasingly challenge what we consider to be a huge farce,” added Mr Casaca. “The solution is not war, nor is it a policy of connivance, but a change of regime in Iran brought about by Iranians and their resistance,” Ms Radjavi went on. “We are sure that negotiations will not lead anywhere. It is a fragile regime, afraid of the opposition. Ms Radjavi is the only alternative for a free and democratic Iran,” said Mr Camre.

Ms Radjavi was invited to the EP by several MEPs from the EPP-ED, GUE/NGL and UEN groups which also complained about the “pressure” which had led Ms Radjavi to put back a Parliamentary hearing, initially scheduled for Wednesday, until the autumn. Ms Radjavi said she did not want the hearing to serve as a pretext for the Iranian regime to break off negotiations with the “Six”. “This postponement is a rare example of responsible politics,” said Mr Brie.
