Brussels, 29/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has sent Greece, Italy, Portugal and Slovenia a reasoned opinion for failing to notify the Commission of any transposition measures for directive 2004/51/EC. This directive, which is part of the framework of the Second Railway Package, aims to open the market for international freight transport by rail as of 1 January 2006 and the market for national transport by 1 January 2007. The Directive had to be implemented into national legislation by 31 December 2004 at the latest. The four countries have two months to respond to the Commission's demands. The next step of the infringement procedure would be taking the matter to the European Court of Justice.
