THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) osce/parliamentary assembly

27/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly is to meet from 3 to 7 July at the European Parliament in Brussels to discuss matters such as Guantanamo, Nagorno Karabakh, Belarus, Moldova, the trade in human beings and portable weapons. Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt and Foreign Minister Karel de Gucht will attend the opening session. The Assembly will then hear speeches by Marc Perin de Brichambaut, OSCE Secretary General; René van der Linden, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe; and Tone Tingsgård, PA Special Representative of the OSCE for questions on equality between men and women. On 4 July, the president of the Belgian Senate, Anne-Marie Lizin, is to present the report and proposal for a resolution on Guantanamo, followed by debates on Nagorno Karabakh, Belarus and Moldova. At the behest of the Belgian delegation, a discussion is also scheduled on the proliferation of portable weapons. The vote on the final document and recommendations will be on Friday 7 July.
