27/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - In a press release issued from Amsterdam on 27 June, the European Network Against Arms Trade (ENAAT) gave its reaction to the recent consultation paper published by the European Commission on measures for the creation of a European market in defence-related products. The Network and several other organisations, including Forum voor Vreded actie in Belgium and the “Stoppt den Rüstungsexport” campaign in Germany, believe the adoption of measures ensuring the free movement of defence-related products, without prior authorisation, among EU Member States could increase the risks of re-exporting, by reducing the Member States' abilities to monitor adequately the use to which the goods would be put by the final user. The organisations call for the retention by each Member State of an effective monitoring and control system over the export of defence-related products.
