Brussels, 12/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - The first 'High Level Political Dialogue on Counter-Terrorism' was held in Brussels on 10 May. Austrian interior minister, Liese Prokop, standing next to Karl Salmi, Finland's interior minister, said it was important for the big EU institutions to meet up in order to increase democratic accountability. She said that alongside implementing the EU's strategy on 'radicalisation and recruitment', judicial cooperation proposals were pressing ahead (meaning SIS II and the future of Europol). The President of the European Parliament's Civil Liberties Committee, Jean-Marie Cavada (ALDE, France) regretted that the EU had come up with more security laws since 11 September 2001 than laws ensuring a high level of protection for individuals. He argued that restrictions on individuals' freedom and rights should be the exception rather than the rule and should be limited to cases where they are absolutely necessary. Commissioner Frattini said the European Commission would be adopted two decisions in the near future - funding a 'Pilot Project Terrorism' (sic) (EUR 10 mil) and a programme to facilitate management of terrorism-related crises. EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator, Gijs de Vries, stressed the importance of actually implementing in the field all the various action plans and strategies decided by the politicians. The next 'High Level Political Dialogue on Counter-Terrorism' will probably be held in November 2006.
