Brussels, 12/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - The 16th meeting of the EU-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Joint Cooperation Council will take place in Brussels on Monday 15 May. Alongside examination of common action under the June 1998 agreement, the two sides will discuss events in the Middle East (security in the Gulf region, terrorism, Iran, Iraq, Middle-East and Mediterranean). One of the main topics of discussion will be nuclear proliferation and the Iran dossier. Gulf states are concerned about the military danger of Iran developing a nuclear weapon and want international consensus to turn the entire Middle East region into a nuclear free zone - including Israel therefore. The politicians will also be discussing the oil market and the impact of the rising crude oil prices. They will look at the current talks regarding a future free exchange agreement. In theory, the talks have now terminated, but in reality they have not yet actually formally started. Discussions will also cover changes in the Gulf states and their plan to establish a common currency.
