Brussels, 08/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - According to the 8 May issue of the Austrian newspaper Der Standard, in its monitoring report on Bulgaria and Romania's preparedness to join the EU, to be published on 16 May, the European Commission will be suggesting postponing any decisions on the exact date when the two countries join the EU until after the summer break. Because of continuing problems with reforming the legal system and tackling endemic corruption and organised crime, EU heads of state will probably be asked to postpone until the autumn of this year their decision about whether Bulgaria and Romania can really join the EU as scheduled on 1 January 2007 or whether their accession will have to be put off until 2008. Postponing the decision-making will put pressure on Romania and - more importantly - Bulgaria to get their governments to actually do what is required to prepare their countries for joining the EU, reports the Austrian newspaper, citing unnamed European Commission sources. On Monday, a spokesperson for the Commission, Johannes Laitenberger, refused to comment, saying that the Commission would take the decision on 16 May.
