02/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - By adopting Pedro Guerreiro's report (GUE/NGL, Portugal) on 27 April, the European Parliament gave its approval to the November 2005 proposal amending the fisheries protocol between the EU and Mauretania, which covers the period from 1 August 2001 to 31 July 2006. Modifications introduced to the protocol are as follows: a temporary reduction of five fishing licences for “cephalopods”, setting a second period for a biological stay of one month for deep sea fish, the increase from 31 to 35 licenses for pole-and-line and long line tuna fishing vessels and the increase from 15 to 25 pelagic freezer pair trawlers. These amendments aim to integrate the fishing fleet of the new Member States that operate in the area in question (Latvia and Lithuania).
