Brussels, 02/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has decided to allocate € 1 million to Ecuador to help flood victims from the torrential rains raging in the country since the beginning of February. The funds will come from the ECHO budget (the Commission's Humanitarian Aid Service) and will fund a wide range of activities: re-establishing access to drinking water and purification, distribution of hygiene items, disinfection of health centres and schools, food aid, monitoring diseases to prevent outbreaks of epidemics, preparation for disasters, distribution of goods enabling farmers to recommence their subsistence activities. This aid is expected to help around 10,000 families - a total of 60,000 people.
