Green light to support for First Solar in Germany

Brussels, 27/04/2006 (Agence Europe) -The Commission has authorised aid of 45.5 million EUR to be paid by the German government to FIRST SOLAR Manufacturing GmbH (FSM) for the construction of a factory to produce solar modules in Frankfurt. The company's objective is to transfer and adapt its expertise and production techniques to this factory, in order to start to produce solar modules on the European market, which is currently experiencing rapid expansion. In order to make it solar modules, FSM will use a different procedure, photovoltaic technologies using thin-film, which uses only very small quantities of raw materials and very little energy. The project, which will cost a total of 115 million EUR, will contribute to the development of the Land of Brandenburg, in terms of jobs in particular. It was authorised under Community rules on regional aid (article 87§3).
