06/04/2006 (Agence Europe) - MEP Iles Braghetto (EPP-ED, Italy) has launched a statement, for signature by his colleagues, on safeguarding the religious heritage of the northern part of Cyprus. In the statement, signed along with Greek MEP Panayotis Demetriou, of the same group, he says that, while Turkey has made progress in human rights over the last few years, it also had to show respect for the cultural, historic and religious heritage of other peoples. Since 1974, several religious buildings in the part of the island under Turkish control were no longer consecrated, and have sometimes been made into mosques or been given a non-religious use.
