03/04/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 28 March, the European Commission adopted, through the written procedure, Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) for control/command and signalling on the conventional trans-European railway network. The adopted decision will allow the gradual replacement of the twenty different signalling and speed control systems, which are currently being used in the EU, by a single system, the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). The aim is, ultimately, to bring an end to the current situation whereby most international trains, whether passenger or freight, travelling on the conventional network, are required to stop at the station nearest the border to change locomotives before continuing their journeys. The installation of ERTMS is already compulsory on all new railway rolling stock intended for the high-speed network. The decision follows the Commission's July 2005 communication to deploy the ERMTS (see EUROPE 8983).
