CER says road/rail complementarity is needed

Brussels, 15/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - The growth in goods transport in Europe cannot solely be borne by road transport. It is therefore necessary to use all the advantages provided by the different methods of transport: rail for long haul and road for short haul. In the Community of European Railway's (CER) response to French MEP Ari Vatanen (EPP-ED), in an article published on 14 March in The Financial Times entitled “Europe's mania for railways is wasting our money”, argues in favour of road transport over rail. “The statement of Mr Vatanen is the personal opinion of a former rally driver. It completely disregards the reality of European rail transport in the last decade and reflects a position that has no backing at all in the Transport Committee of the European Parliament”, CER President Johannes Ludewig told EUROPE.
