Strasbourg, 15/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Parliament's internal reform proposals put forward by President Borrell in a document presented last Thursday to the Conference of Presidents (see EUROPE 9145), which did not gain the unanimity of the leaders of political groups, did have an impact at the beginning of the plenary this week. Struan Stevenson (EPP-Ed, Scotland) was highly critical of Mr Borrell's ideas on Monday and questioned their legal base, while the president of the PES Group, Martin Schulz, assured the Parliament's president of his group's full support. Backing Josep Borrell's ideas, mainly in favour of holding debates on key themes that make the work of the Parliament more visible, Mr Schulz recalled that, during the main debates on Wednesday for example, the Commission and the Council will, between the two of them, have as much time on the floor as all the MEPs together regarding the Spring Summit on 23 and 24 March. Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Co-President of the Greens/EFA Group, backed his colleague saying, on Monday, that President Barroso will be speaking to them on the Lisbon Strategy at least for the third time and “it would surprise me if he can come up with anything new …”.
