Peter Hustinx generally satisfied with security in Eurodac central unit

Brussels, 14/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - Following his first inspection of the EURODAC central unit, the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), Peter Hustinx, presented a report in which he states he is “generally satisfied” with the level of security. Mr Hustinx says in a press release dated 9 March that the Eurodac system is a “key feature in the procedure for everyone seeking asylum in the EU” and whose fingerprints are taken. The report covers the first phase of an inspection that will be followed up by an indepth security audit during 2006. Several aspects of the central unit's security level have been inspected, such as risks and incidents management, security of communications, physical access control, etc. The EDPS has hosted a coordination meeting with the national authorities to discuss a common approach to the supervision of Eurodac. He intends to share his findings during the next meeting in June in order to enhance collaboration with the national level.
