Javier Solana expects more of an effort from Tehran

Brussels, 22/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - During the meeting with the Iranian foreign affairs minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, on Monday in Brussels, Mr Solana declared in a communiqué, “I stated clearly what the position will be: to listen and to read the report by Dr Baradei to be issued before 6 March when the next Board of Governors meeting will take place”. Mr Solana hoped that “the Iranian side shows movement in the right direction before that date”. While underlining the fact that Mr Mottaki came to Brussels at the invitation of the European Parliament (EUROPE 9135 and 9136), Mr Solana explained, “It is of fundamental importance that Iran makes the effort to build up confidence-building measures which convince Dr Baradei and the members of the Board of Governors. I do not think that proposals to insist on nuclear research development contribute very much to building confidence; they probably go more in the opposite direction”. Overall, Mr Solana, who was in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Israel and Palestine last week said that he had sent “a message to Mr Mottaki: Basically, in all countries that I visited during my trip to the Middle East I have received sentiment that the cooperation of Iran in matters pertaining to the stability of the region is not sufficient…The involvement with Lebanon, with Hezbollah and Hamas and even with Iraq and Afghanistan is not constructive”.
