Commission expresses concern about competition conditions on digital TV market in Italy

Brussels, 16/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has sent a letter to the Italian communications minister, Mario Landolfi, in order to clarify the conditions in which Italy distributes frequencies for ground digital TV. The letter, which is of an informal kind, was sent further to a complaint filed by a consumers' association and an emission operator. According to the Commission, the Italian system could be anti-competitive in that the licenses are only attributed to operators already present on the analogous TV market. This market is already not very competitive, the Commission says in concern. According to Mr Landolfi, the situation is changing with the emergence of a new competitor, Telecom, alongside the two current and dominant groups, Rai and Mediaset, and this, he stresses, could change the current television landscape, which is in full technological mutation.
