Paris accuses Tehran of clandestine military nuclear programme - Iranian negotiator Ari Larijani ejects this

Brussels, 16/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy accused Iran for the first time of having a clandestine nuclear military programme. “It is very simple: no nuclear programme can explain the Iranian nuclear programme - it is a clandestine nuclear military programme,” he said on French radio station France 2. Iranian chief nuclear negotiator Ari Larijani immediately rejected these accusations. “We are not seeking a nuclear bomb, since we a signatory to the (nuclear) Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT),” he told France Inter from Tehran. He added, “We are a responsible country”. Saying that he held the French minister in high regard, Mr Larijani continued, “If I had been in Mr Doust-Blazy's shoes, I would perhaps have used the influence of France to find a way to resolve this problem. Instead of inflaming the situation, diplomats should be seeking a solution”. On the position of Washington, which does not exclude the military option against Tehran, Mr Larijani called on the EU “not to echo American positions”. The Board of Governors of the IAEA is due to meet on 6 March to determine what next to do in this matter which was reported to the UN Security Council on 4 February.
