Brussels, 01/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - With International Atomic Energy Agency Council of Governors due to decide on Thursday what to do on the Iranian nuclear programme, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad challenged the nuclear powers on the UN Security Council to stop his country from pursuing its programme. “Iran will not give up its right to nuclear technology. It will resist until it achieves this right, and, if it is referred to the Security Council, it will voluntarily cease to respect the NPT's additional protocol,” he said, going on “Nuclear power stations will be built throughout the country with a capacity of up to 20,000 megawatts”. Iran's main negotiator in the nuclear dossier Ari Larijani warned that Iran would use all its means in the region to stand up to the pressure from the international community. Tehran could, in particular, bring the oil weapon into play, although Iranian Energy Minister Kazem Vaziri sought to give reassurances over possible reductions in Iran's crude oil exports: “We don't mix oil and politics” he said at the margin of an OPEC meeting on Tuesday. British Foreign Minister Jack Straw was due to meet his Iranian counterpart, Manouchehr Mottaki on Wednesday afternoon to explain that “the international community's stance should not be seen as a threat but as the final opportunity to prove the peaceful nature of the Iranian nuclear programme”.
