Brussels, 01/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - The President of the Council of the EU Ursula Plassnik, along with her Afghan counterpart Abdullah Abdullah, chaired a meeting of the EU Troika, attended also by CFSP High Representative Javier Solana, Commissioner Benita Ferrero Waldner and, for the upcoming Finnish Presidency, Trade Minister Mari Kiviniemi, in London on Wednesday. Following the example of the EU delegation the previous day at the London International Ministerial Conference, attended by some fifty countries, the Troika confirmed its intention to strengthen cooperation with Kabul, with whom the EU signed a declaration on future priorities in November 2005. Mrs Plassnik raised the development of institutions, security and the fight against drugs as the priorities. At the London conference, the Afghanistan Compact was adopted. This will serve as the basis for the partnership between Kabul and the international community over the next five years, according to a press release from the Austrian Presidency.
