Brussels, 30/01/2006 (Agence Europe) - The EU foreign ministers declared on Monday that the European Union is willing to continue providing financial support for economic development and the creation of democratic structures in Palestine on condition that the future Palestinian government is committed to seeking a peaceful and negotiated solution to the conflict with Israel, that it complies with existing agreements and that it accepts Israel's right to existence. In a declaration, the General Affairs/External Relations Council asserts that “violence and terror are incompatible with democratic processes”. It urges Hamas and all the other factions to “renounce violence, to recognise Israel's right to exist and to disarm”. The Council expects the newly elected Palestinian Legislative Council, elected on 25 January, to support the formation of a government committed to a peaceful and negotiated solution of the conflict with Israel based on existing agreements and the Roadmap, as well as to the rule of law, reform and sound fiscal management, the Twenty-Five say. On this basis, the “Union stands ready to continue to support Palestinian economic development and democratic state building”, the conclusions read. The Council also restates its support for the emergence of an independent, democratic and viable Palestinian state living side by side in peace and security with Israel and its other neighbours.
