30/01/2006 (Agence Europe) - President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso congratulated Tarja Halonen on her re-election as President of the Republic of Finland, in the second round of voting on 29 January, with 51.8% of votes against 48.2% for her Conservative opponent Sauli Niinistö. Mr Barroso wrote that she had been re-elected at an important time, when Finland is preparing to assume the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of this year.
