Services Directive and more flexible labour markets are important to SME Union

Brussels, 27/01/2006 (Agence Europe) - Christoph Leitl, President of the SME Union (the Small and Medium Entrepreneurs Union of the European People's Party), says that 'one year into the renewed Lisbon Agenda, there is a common vision among governments about what needs to be done in order to boost jobs and growth and make Europe more dynamic and more competitive,' Commenting on the European Commission's progress report (see EUROPE 9117), he said Member States 'will have to implement most of the reforms in question without ifs and buts.' At the European level, the SME Union 'considers a swift agreement on the Services Directive to be a major precondition in order to unlock Europe's growth potential: 'The completion of the single market integrating the services sector is one of the few areas in which Europe can achieve growth and long-term job creation purely through internal change,' said President Leitl.' SME Union wants the current revision of the working time directive to enable SMEs to stay flexible.
