16/01/2006 (Agence Europe) - Reportedly due to the absence of representatives of the United States, Libya has postponed until 21 January talks with Bulgaria on setting up a compensation fund for the families of children contaminated with the AIDS virus, according to Libyan sources quoted by Reuters. The talks had initially been planned to take place in Tripoli (the Libyan capital) on 15 January, attended by EU and US observers, to strike a deal on compensating families and providing medical care for children suffering from AIDS. A few years ago, Libya sentenced five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor to death for allegedly deliberately infecting more than 500 children with the AIDS virus. In December, Libya's supreme court cancelled the death sentences, ordering a re-trial (see EUROPE 9106).
