Brussels, 05/01/2006 (Agence Europe) - The future Bolivian president, Evo Morales (who is to take up office on 22 January), began a tour of the European capitals on Wednesday beginning with Spain. After an exchange of views with the Spanish prime minister, José Luis Zapatero, Mr Morales was in Brussels on Thursday to meet EU High Representative for CFSP Javier Solana as well as the Belgian authorities. Mr Morales' visit is above all aimed at reassuring European investors and multinationals that, like the Spanish oil company Repsol (which invested $800 million in recent years in Bolivia's natural gas resources thus owning 25% of the country's reserves), are concerned about the possible nationalisation of gas in Bolivia. During his electoral campaign, the new president had promised to nationalise Bolivia's gas resources, but “without expropriation of the international associates”.
