Commission defends Neelie Kroes

Brussels, 05/01/2006 (Agence Europe) - The recent declarations by Neelie Kroes, who had said on Dutch television that EU enlargement should end with Romania and Hungary (EUROPE 9101, p.4) will not hold any consequences for the Competition Commissioner, the Commission spokesman said on Thursday. Ms Kroes, who said the limit to enlargement will be reached with 27 Member States, pointed out she had “made her declarations in reference to the current treaty and the existing institutional settings”.It is not surprising” to hear a Commissioner express the view that it would be difficult to enlarge the EU to over 27 members without making the necessary institutional changes beforehand, he said.
