EU and Cape Verde sign new fisheries agreement

Brussels, 29/12/2005 (Agence Europe) - On 21 December, the European Commission announced the agreement of a new five-year fisheries partnership between the EU and Cape Verde from 1 September 2005 to 31 August 2011. It will provide fishing possibilities exclusively for tuna for 84 EU vessels: 25 senners, 11 pole-and-line vessels and 48 surface long-liners. The EU financial contribution will amount to EUR 385,000 a year, most of which relates to EU catches of 5,000 tonnes a year in Cape Verde waters. In October 2004, the EU passed a regulation to extend from 1 July 2004 to 30 June 2005 the previous fisheries agreement between the EU and Cape Verde to give more time to negotiate a new agreement.
