Brussels, 15/12/2005 (Agence Europe) - The former president of the European Parliament, Pat Cox, was elected as the new president of the European Movement International (EMI), on 13 December in London. He succeeds José Maria Gil Robles, who is also a former president of the European Parliament. In his election statement, Mr Cox showed great determination in “building on the historical heritage of the EMI and transforming it into a campaign movement in favour of Europe around 4 basic key-words: clarity, courage, campaign and capacity-building”. Several MEPs are part of the new EMI Steering Committee: - the chairman of the constitutional committee, Jo Leinen, Andrew Duff, Pierre Moscovici, Carlos Carnero Gonzalez, Luis de Grandes Pascual - as well as the former chairman of the constitutional committee, Giorgio Napolitano, and the general secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), John Monks. It has been confirmed that Henrik H. Kroner will be the secretary general of the EMI.
