Plenary vote on "Services" directive postponed until February

Brussels, 15/12/2005 (Agence Europe) - The plenary vote of the European Parliament on the proposed "Services" directive has finally been postponed to the session of February 2006. The Conference of the Presidents of the political groups of the Parliament, which met on 14 December, did not include the highly controversial draft directive on the agenda of its plenary session due to take place from 16 to 19 January. This decision will be music to the ears of Francis Wurtz, President of the United European Left/Nordic Green Left group, who insisted, at the Conference of the Presidents on 8 December, that the Gebhardt reported be postponed from January to February. Displeased with the results of the vote on the report, by the committee on the internal market on 22 November, the GUE/NGL group started a campaign for the proposed directive to be rejected, and, on 9 December, published a call to the social players to "make all their weight count" to this end. Mr Wurtz made the postponement of this vote on a central point of this "next stage of our battle" (see EUROPE 9085). The debate on the Gebhardt report has been included on the agenda for 14 February 2006.
