Brussels, 09/12/2005 (Agence Europe) - Several days ahead of the parliamentary elections in Iraq (15 December), the conference of presidents of the European Parliament decided on 8 December to send an ad hoc delegation of three MEPs to Iraq next week. Only the President of the GUE/NGL Francis Wurtz opposed this step which was requested by the British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw. Considering that the situation in Iraq does not allow adequate freedom of movement, the Parliament will not send an electoral observation mission in the strictest sense. Although the sending of the delegation coincides with the Iraqi elections, the MEPs will not write a report on the elections, a spokesperson for the EP told the press on Friday. The names of the three MEPs have not yet been decided, but two of them will come from the ranks of the PPE-DE and the PSE.
