Brussels, 21/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - The national trade union federations affiliated to the ETUF: TCL (European Trade Union Federation for Textiles, Clothing, Leather and Footwear) organised a trade union action week in November, presenting national governments with their nine-point platform for 'fair and sustainable trade in textiles, clothing, leather and footwear' calling on the Commission, Member States and employers to take a series of measures to protect jobs in these sectors. The ETUF: TCL wants the Commission to negotiate 'fair and comparable reciprocal market access' at the WTO Summit in Hong Kong, taking account of the interests of developing countries; to include a sustainable dimension with reference to core labour standards and trade union rights in all European agreements and, in the long term, all international agreements; to supervise and control the evolution of European TCL imports from China or 'any other dominant country'. The ETUF: TCL wants Member States to adopt compulsory marking of origin; defend industrial employment; to implement an industrial policy taking into account the specific characteristics of the TCL sectors; to guarantee European social accompanying measures for all workers affected by restructuring by adopting globalisation adjustment funds as suggested by Jose Manuel Barroso. It wants TCL employers to strengthen sectoral social dialogue at all levels; to create genuine European social consultation; it invest more in the lifelong training of workers; to adopt a socially responsible attitude in the event of restructuring; to pursue and accelerate the modernisation of TCL companies.
