Brussels, 18/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - Representatives of musicians' unions of 23 European countries (within the EU and outside) met in Berlin on 5/6 November for the first FIM International Federation of Musicians) European group meeting. They agreed that the UNESCO Convention on cultural diversity is 'a major step'; in the EU's draft services directive, the culture industry should be 'exempted from the 'country of law' principle'; 'there should be a Europe-wide definition of the cultural worker'; 'all musicians should be granted the right to bargain collectively and benefit from an appropriate protection in terms of labour and social rights'; and the European 'Commission's Impact Assessment on a Community Initiative on the Cross-border Collective Management of Copyright does not represent a satisfactory answer to the needs of the sector.'
