Academia Diplomatica Europaea starts its third academic year

Brussels, 18/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - The third academic year of Academia Diplomatica Europaea (ADE) was opened this week with a lecture by Sandro Gozi (one of the European Commission President's political advisors) on the political paradox of the EU - the fact that it's an economic, trading and monetary power, but not a true political power. Its political weight in the world does not match its real weight because it does not apply the benefits of its success in other areas to foreign policy. It is capable of influencing the behaviour of other countries (through its neighbourhood and pre-accession policies), but does not make the most of its full weight. In order to progress in this area, the EU needs a 'European political culture, said Gozi, which the ADE can usefully help create. Following Sandro Gozi's address, Irnerio Seminatore, President of the European Institute of International Relations and ADE Director, delivered a lecture on Marshall de Saxe, whom the 2005/2006 academic year is named after.
