President Borrell sincerely hopes reforms will be successfully carried out

Strasbourg, 25/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the United Nations, the president of the European Parliament, Josep Borrell, opened the plenary session in Strasbourg, on 24 October, with a brief statement stressing the support that the Parliament will continue to give to the role of the UN. As Kofi Annan had so rightly said in his message that day, the UN must mirror the present era and the problems that characterise that era, President Borrell said, regretting that the results of the Millennium Summit last September in New York had not lived up to the Parliament's ambitions. Mr Borrell went on to conclude saying that they are adamant about the process of reforms envisaged in New York being rapidly accomplished, mainly when it concerns the creation of a Human Rights Council and a Commission for Consolidation of Peace.
