Brussels, 24/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is expected to authorise the marketing of two genetically modified varieties of maize produced by US company Monsanto, MON 863 and GA 21 for human consumption. As expected, the EU's farm ministers in Luxembourg on Monday, did not reach a qualified majority either for or against the planned authorisation of the two GMOs (see EUROPE 9054). The Council could not agree either on the European Commission's plan to order the lifting of Greece's embargo on genetically modified MON 810 hybrid maize seed, which might be included in the common catalogue of authorised farm vegetable species. As set out in the comitology procedure, the European Commission will now adopt legislation to force Greece to lift its ban. Denmark and Luxembourg recently called for a debate to be organised at the upcoming Environment Council (7 December) on the EU's policy on GMOs.
