Brussels, 06/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - The meeting between European External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner and the Vice-President of Guatemala, Eduardo Stein, in Brussels on 5 October focussed on progress in implementing the Guatemala Peace Accords. After the meeting, the Commissioner said the EU wants the Guatemalan government to continue to consolidate the Peace Accords and implement the most urgent reforms, particularly in fiscal and rural affairs and measures to better integrate the indigenous population. She welcomed the Guatemalan government's moves to boost regional integration across Central America and settle its border dispute with Belize. She also welcomed the establishment of an office of the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights in Guatemala, part-financed by the European Commission (EUR 1.2 mil).
Eduardo Stein and Rigoberta Menchu (1992 Nobel Peace Prize winner), another member of the Guatemalan delegation, also met with Javier Solana, EU High Representative for CFSP.
