Brussels, 29/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - Franco Frattini, the Commissioner for justice, freedom and security has regretted in a press release “the tragic event on Wednesday night and Thursday that led to the deaths of several people in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in Morocco”. At least five immigrants died and fifty other were injured during an attempt to enter Ceuta in the north of Morocco. This follows similar incidents a few weeks ago. According to Mr Frattini, “this tragedy again proves the urgent need for efficient management of migration issues”. He also affirmed that “meetings and dialogue with our Moroccan partners are a priority” for the Commission, which bases its strategy on “a consolidation of legal immigration channels and the situation of legal immigrants, as well as an effective system of asylum”. The Commission has already taken a big step towards a genuine immigration policy, which includes a strategy on migration and development. The Commission declared that they wanted to more closely examine the causes of these tragedies, which have left the Mediterranean grieving, in order to prevent further lost of life.
