Brussels, 26/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday evening the new US Ambassador to NATO, Victoria Nuland, declared that “it doesn't make sense to draw lines in the world”. She stated that it was necessary to “deepen mechanisms on a case by case” basis on what is the “best organisation for the job”. She also underlined that this had been done with a few difficulties for Darfur but had been done better in Bosnia. During her first speech since she took up her post this summer, made at the invitation of the German Marshall Fund, the US ambassador insisted on the fact that the US wanted and needed a strong, productive and “thriving” relationship. She complained of the “cumbersome” nature of the dialogue with the European Union, outlining that they had been working bilaterally with the Commission, COPS and the Presidency rather than working directly with Member States, as the USA does with NATO. She added that they would continue to work directly with “the mechanisms we have… our focus is to do as much as we can with these mechanisms”. In an effort to drive the message home for George Bush's second mandate, she affirmed that the stronger the EU was, the better it was for the USA.
