23/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - The International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) and the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (REMDH) express deep concern in a press release by the fact that international participants to the Congress of the Algerian League for the Defence of Human Rights (LADDH) were refused a visa to participate in the Congress in Algeria on 22/23 September ahead of the referendum to adopt a draft Charter for Peace and National Reconciliation on 29 September. Both FIDH and REMDH criticise the Charter for containing provisions 'aimed at exonerating both security forces and armed groups from accountability for grave human rights abuses' after a decade of violent conflict. The FIDH points out that the Algerian authorities have recognised on several occasions that more that the conflict has caused the death of some 200,000 people.
