23/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - A new Italian economics and finance minister will be appointed very shortly. On Thursday evening, the day after Domenico Siniscalco resigned (see EUROPE 9033), the Italian prime minister announced that Guilio Tremonti, former finance minister, would be returning to the post he occupied in 2001 and 2004. Guilio Tremonti was in Washington on Friday at the G7 meeting, alongside the Governor of the Banca d'Italia, Antonio Fazio. Criticised by Siniscalco for his government's failure to act in the Fazio case, Silvio Berlusconi told reporters that keeping the Governor of the Bank of Italy in his job was not longer appropriate and damaged Italy's credibility.
