Brussels, 23/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - The chair and 2nd vice-chair of the European Parliament's Delegation for relations with Uzbekistan, Ona Jukneviciene (ALDE, Lithuania) and Bernadette Bourzai (PES, France) explain in a press release their disappointment at the decision of the Uzbek authorities to postpone the 6th EU-Uzbekistan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee that was due to take place in Uzbekistan on 6 October (such committees have been set up for countries that have signed a Partnership and Cooperation Agreement with the EU). The MEPs explain that 'the European Parliament delegation was keen to learn as much as possible about the events in Andijan of May 2005 when a large number of civilians were killed … and about the plight of refugees and those individuals who have been forced to return to Uzbekistan… we underline the need for the trail of the individuals accused of plotting to overthrow the Uzbek government, which has just begun, to comply fully with international law and we call for independent observers to have complete access to its proceedings.'
