Daniel Libeskind's WTC memorial unveiled in Padua

Brussels, 09/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - This Sunday 11 September, the fourth anniversary of the terrorist attacks against the Twin Towers in the United States, the Memorial (WTC Memorial "Memory and Light "), which has been built in the historic centre of the city (Giardini delle Porte Contarine), will be unveiled in Padua by Daniel Libeskind, the architect behind the complex to be erected in New York at "Ground Zero".

A twisted and burnt steel beam, salvaged from one of the Twin Towers (and donated by the city of New York to the city of Padua), forms the centre of the monument, alongside a reproduction of the book the Statue of Liberty holds in her hand, symbolising challenge and hope. The ceremony is sponsored by the European Commission. A message from Javier Solana congratulates the city of Padua and the Region of Veneto, stressing that the signification of the Memorial, which is "striking, iconoclastic, grave yet full of hope, an appropriate tribute to the memory of the victims and to transatlantic solidarity".
