30/08/2005 (Agence Europe) - George Koumoutsakos, Greek Foreign Ministry spokesman, stressed in a press release on 27 August, reported by the ANA agency, that only a “mutually acceptable solution would facilitate FYROM's course towards achieving its desire to advance towards and join Euro-Atlantic institutions. His comment came after the decision by Poland to henceforth use the name “Macedonia” in bilateral communications with Skopje. ANA recalls that Athens and Skopje have made considerable progress in bilateral relations since the interim agreement signed ten years ago with UN mediation but the “name issue” continues to block full normalisation of ties. Greece is still opposed to Skopje using the name “Macedonia”, citing historical and political reasons (as well as geographic, as Greece's largest province is called Macedonia).
