Brussels, 30/08/2005 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has published a report on 'Quality and Efficiency in Education' (Special Report 3/2004) in its European Economy series. The publication is the proceedings of a workshop organised in May 2004 by DG Economic and Financial Affairs to look at quality and efficiency in European education from an economic point of view, considering the recognition of the role of the education system in stimulating productivity, the importance of education for assuring social cohesion, the apparent links between rising educational attainment and the development of the knowledge-based economy, and the possible role of education and training in solving the problem of high unemployment. Various chapters look at the situation in Europe, basic compulsory education, post-compulsory education, adult education and training and human capital policy in the EU.
