30/08/2005 (Agence Europe) - A press release from the secretariat of the pan-European inter-governmental research organisation EUREKA indicates that a research project being led in partnership by teams from Austria and Slovenia has led to improvements in the molecular structure and protection film of synthetic vascular organs, which can be implanted in human body to replace defective arteries or veins when it is not possible to graft human tissue, usually autologous. This type of implants is still being developed. They are likely to last longer than those currently available (in Teflon or Dacron), which will lead to a reduction in the number of surgical operations for patients and a reduced in cost for health care systems. The risk of infection will also be considerably reduced.
