Brussels, 17/08/2005 (Agence Europe) - On 15 August, CFSP High Representative, Javier Solana welcomed the signing that day in Helsinki (under the guidance of the former Finnish prime minister Martti Ahtisaari) of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Indonesian government and the Free Aceh Movement. The agreement marks an end to thirty years of fighting in this province, devastated by the tsunami in December 2004. In a declaration, Mr Solana, was pleased to point out that the Indonesian government and FAM had agreed to “immediately show restraint, to halt hostilities in Aceh and to fully implement the agreements”. Solana pointed out that following the official invitation that he had addressed to the Indonesian government and which has the full support of FAM, the EU now plans “together with five ASEAN states, the deployment of a monitoring mission in Aceh on 15 September (EUROPE 9000). Other third countries will make their contributions, Mr Solana explained, indicating that EU and ASEAN officials were already preparing the mission. He stressed that this mission would be very important for the region and which marked “an important new phase in the cooperation between the EU and ASEAN”.
