MEPs call for nuclear disarmament

Brussels, 05/08/2005 (Agence Europe) - MEP Gisela Kallenbach, who is attending ceremonies on 5 and 6 August in memory of the victims of the nuclear bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki sixty years ago, has appealed to MEPs for nuclear disarmament. “To honour those killed and to make sure what happened here in Hiroshima never happens again, we must work together to create peace”, the German Green member states in a press release, calling on “the mayors of our electoral constituencies to join together in the 'Mayors for Peace' initiative at the 6th annual conference in Hiroshima from 4 to 6 August” (EUROPE 9005). Furthermore, she calls on the United States to stop developing nuclear weapons and to adopt a timetable for withdrawing strategic nuclear weapons from their military bases in Europe.

Greenpeace Japan calls on the Japanese government to start abandoning plans for plutonium production at the Rokkasho-Mura reprocessing plant.
